Position Information

Job Description

To protect the public and strengthen communities in Virginia Beach through effective intervention for youth on probation and their families. To provide probation supervision for youth who are high risk in the YASI family domain. To complete comprehensive court reports and assessments to identify the risk, need, and responsivity factors that contribute to criminality. To provide and/or coordinate services for evidence based interventions to address criminogenic and responsivity needs. To assist the supervisor in performing leadership duties, to include gathering recidivism data and identifying trends, mentoring new employees, and organizing and leading unit projects. When needed, provide on-site assistance in satellite offices and serve as the supervisor’s designee on committees and presentations for the community and agency partners. Proficient in Youth Assessment and Screening Instrument (YASI) reports, Effective Practices in Community Supervision (EPICS), Motivational Interviewing (MI) and Family Systems interventions and assist supervisors with coaching to staff. Duties may also include facilitating groups, monitoring community service, and providing transportation as needed for clients

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of the criminal justice system. Demonstrated counseling, case management, Family Systems, Motivational Interviewing, and Cognitive Behavioral Interventions (EPICS) skills. Demonstrated ability to interview children and families using Motivational Interviewing techniques, produce comprehensive written reports, and use knowledge of criminogenic risk factors, evidence based practices and effective interventions to develop case management plans to reduce recidivism. Ability to identify and utilize community resources. Group facilitation skills. Ability to manage time effectively and work within short deadlines. Excellent analyzing and problem solving skills. Ability to interpret regulations and policies and procedures. Articulates information well and communicates effectively with others. Excellent writing skills. Basic keyboarding skills and use of Word required. Ability to be mobile in the community and travel throughout the state. Must be flexible; duties may be amended and employee may be transferred to another unit as needed. Valid driver’s license at time of hire. Upon employment, successful completion of DJJ sponsored YASI, EPICS, MI, and Family Systems coaching classes as they become available.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelors degree in criminal justice, criminology, sociology, social work, psychology or counseling

Experience effectively using Cognitive Behavioral Interventions with youth and families before the court and/or under supervision to a VA court service unit is preferable
