Job Description

Norfolk State University, (NSU) a historically black university with an enrollment of over 5,000 students, seeks a Dean of the College of Science, Engineering, and Technology. The selected Dean must be an energetic leader, strategic thinker, relationship builder and effective communicator who will broaden the role of the College throughout the university.

The College of Science, Engineering, and Technology is comprised of eight academic departments: Biology, Mathematics, Chemistry, Computer Science, Engineering, Nursing and Allied Health, Physics and Technology, and has specialized program accreditations and program approvals from: Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN); American Chemical Society (ACS); Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND); Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET; Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET; National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) and; the Association of Technology, Management and Applied Engineering (ATMAE).

In addition to research partnerships and curricular innovations, the College fulfills a service and teaching mission that is critical to the success of other schools and colleges, and the University as a whole.

The Dean of the College of Science, Engineering and Technology will be responsible for:

  1. Championing the college externally to donors and alumni, as well as state, national, and international audiences.

  2. Developing budgets and managing the College’s fiscal affairs.

  3. Engaging in strategic planning, fiscal decision-making, resource allocation and objective review of all academic programs.

  4. Facilitating academic and administrative operations within the College of Science, Engineering and Technology.

  5. Leading and supporting the College’s commitment to maintain all accreditations and program approvals.

  6. Providing leadership in all aspects of curriculum planning and development, faculty and staff hiring, faculty development and evaluation, and budget preparation.

  7. Recruiting scholarly and professionally experienced faculty, fundraising, and relating effectively to leaders in the science and civic communities.

  8. Supervising, evaluating and supporting faculty in a manner that promotes excellence in teaching, research, service, and advising improvements to enhance student retention and learning outcomes.

Minimum Qualifications
  1. An earned doctorate degree from an accredited college or university in a discipline offered by the college.

  2. Demonstrated ability to communicate to a diverse audience, both verbally and in writing with emphasis applied to a commitment to diversity.

  3. Demonstrated experience in fundraising and civic engagement.

  4. Excellent interpersonal skills, personal integrity, and a demonstrated commitment to diversity.

  5. Exemplary scholarly and professional achievement, as evidenced by recent peer reviewed publications, books, grantsmanship, and/or other scholarly works.

  6. Significant academic leadership experience equivalent to or above that of a department chair at an accredited college or university.

  7. Significant record of relevant research and scholarship success and the ability to lead complex organizations.

  8. Working knowledge and experience with the accreditation process.
